Shelob's Lair Nightmare (x1)

You are playing Nightmare mode. Do not discard unresolved shadow cards from Shelob at the end of the combat phase. While Cleft of Cirith Ungol is in the staging area, players cannot travel to locations not named Cleft of Cirith Ungol.

Begin with the standard quest deck and encounter deck for the Shelob's Lair scenario. Remove the following cards, in the specified quantities, from the standard encounter deck: 4x Mogul Orc 2x The Under-way 3x Deep Dark Passage 2x Many Openings Then, shuffle the encounter cards in this Nightmare Deck into the remainder of the standard Shelob's Lair encounter deck. Finally, flip this setup card over and place it next to the quest deck. Its effect remains active throughout the game, which is now ready to begin.

Shelob cannot leave the staging area and Sméagol cannot attack or defend. Each player cannot play, or put into play, more than 1 ally each round. No more than 4 progress can be placed on this stage each round.

When Revealed: Add Cleft of Cirith Ungol to the staging area. Flip Sméagol to Gollum and heal all damage from Shelob. Each player places 1 resource on Shelob.

If Gollum is defeated, add him to the victory display. (Do not flip him over.) While Shelob has at least 1 resource on her, she gains: "Forced: When Shelob is dealt any amount of damage, cancel that damage and discard 1 resource from Shelob instead." The players cannot defeat this stage unless both Shelob and Gollum are in the victory display. If the players defeat this stage, they win the game.

Setup: Set Cleft of Cirith Ungol, Shelob and The Great Spider encounter set aside, out of play. Put Sméagol into play under the first player's control. Make Morgul Vale the active location. Add Sméagol's Secret Way to the staging area. Shuffle the encounter deck.

Progress cannot be placed on Underground locations. Response: After Sméagol's Secret Way is explored, discard 3 random cards from each player's hand to discard each Nazgûl enemy in the staging area. Forced: At the end of the quest phase, if Sméagol's Secret Way is in the victory display, advance to stage 2A.

Setup: Each player may trade heroes without incurring a threat penalty. The first player may raise each player’s threat by 1 to search his deck for Anduril and add it to his hand. Remove each burden with these burden set icons from the encounter deck: A Shadow of the Past, Flight to the Ford, The Ring Goes South, The Passage of the Marshes, Shelob’s Lair

Resolution: Add each copy of Overcome by Fear attached to a player's threat dial to the campaign pool and record the name of each player it was attached to. If Army of the Dead is in the victory display, add the Army of the Dead boon to the campaign pool. The players have earned each card added to the campaign pool

The Mountain of Fire (x1)

Setup: Each player may change heroes he controls without incurring the +1 threat penalty. The first player may raise each player's threat by 1 to search his deck for Anduril and add it to his hand. Remove each burden with the following burden set icons from the encounter deck: A Shadow of the Past, Flight to the Ford, The Ring Goes South, The Passage of the Marshes, Shelob's Lair

Resolution: Record the number of resource tokens on The Black Gate in the notes section of the campaign log. If a Wraith on Wings is in the victory display, remove that copy from the campaign pool. If the first player controls Gwaihir, add him to the campaign pool. The players have earned that boon. If a hero is in its controller's discard pile, do not add that hero's name to the list of fallen heroes.
